How to Choose a Sports Court Contractor in India: 7 Things to Check Before You Sign

How to Choose a Sports Court Contractor in India: 7 Things to Check Before You Sign

A sports court is a long-term infrastructure investment. A well-built court lasts 10-15 years with minimal maintenance. A poorly built one needs remedial work within 2-3 seasons — and sometimes sooner.

Choosing the right contractor makes all the difference. Here are seven things to verify before you commit.

1. Ask for Completed Project References — Then Visit Them

Any serious contractor will have a portfolio of completed work. Don't just look at photos — ask for client names and contact numbers, and if possible, visit a completed court in person.

What to look for on a site visit:

  • Surface flatness and consistency
  • Quality of line markings
  • Condition of fencing, net posts, and perimeter finishes
  • Signs of surface cracking, delamination, or drainage issues
  • If a contractor can't provide references or discourages site visits, that is a serious warning sign.

    2. Check Whether They Understand International Standards

Sports courts built to BWF, ITF, FIBA, FIFA, or WSF standards require specific materials, dimensions, and installation tolerances. A contractor who doesn't know these standards cannot build to them.

    Ask directly:

  • "What surface system do you use for this sport and why?"
  • "What is the pile height and infill density for synthetic turf?"
  • "What is the shock absorption rating of this PU surface?"
  • Vague or evasive answers indicate limited technical knowledge.

    3. Insist on a Written, Fixed-Price Quote

Verbal estimates and "approximate" quotes lead to cost escalation during construction. A professional contractor will provide a written quote that covers:

  • Site preparation and civil work
  • Surface materials and installation
  • Fencing, lighting, and net posts
  • Line marking
  • Project timeline with milestones
  • Warranty terms
  • If the quote doesn't cover all of these, ask why.

    4. Clarify Who Does the Actual Work

Many contractors in India act as middlemen — they win the project and subcontract the entire scope to someone else. This creates quality control problems and dilutes accountability.

Ask: "Does your own team do the installation or do you subcontract it?"

The best contractors have trained in-house installation teams for at least the surface work.

    5. Check the Warranty — in Writing

A surface warranty means nothing if it isn't documented. Ask for:

  • Warranty period for surface materials (minimum 3-5 years for quality surfaces)
  • Warranty for structural work
  • What the warranty covers and what voids it
  • Who to contact for warranty claims and what the response time is

  • 6. Understand the Payment Terms

Avoid contractors who ask for 100% payment upfront. A reasonable payment structure for a sports court project:

  • 30-40% mobilisation advance
  • 40-50% on reaching defined milestones
  • 10-20% on handover and sign-off
  • Milestone-linked payments protect you if work quality is below expectation.

    7. Compare Total Cost of Ownership, Not Just Construction Cost

The cheapest quote often uses inferior surface materials that need replacing in 3-4 years. A slightly higher upfront investment in quality materials can save significantly over a 10-year period.

Ask for the expected lifespan of the surface and the estimated cost of replacement — then calculate the total 10-year cost before deciding on price alone.
